Rover 3 1/2 hp Motorcycle - Specifications, Model 1911
Engine
Single vertical cylinder, 85 mm bore, 88 mm stroke, 499 ccm capacity, made entirely by ROVER.
Ball bearings to crankshaft, the one on pulley side specially large.
Very large and heavy flywheels, 8 1/2 in. diameter.
Valves specially large, being 38 x 35 mm.
Cylinder easily detachable without removing other parts.
Tappets, special silence pattern, and easily adjustable or removed.
4 in. ground clearance.
Carburettor and Control
Brown and Barlow or Rover carburettor, with handle-bar control.
The control lever works inwards to open, and can therefore be easily closed with the thumb when travelling at high speeds.
The Magneto, Throttle, extra Air and Exhaust Cut-out, are all controlled from the handle-bar, and all work inwards to advance, and outwards to retard.
Ignition
Bosch High-Tension Magneto, placed behind the engine and driven by Silent Chain, which requires no adjustment, as it automatically takes up all wear.
Covered with aluminium dust-proof case.
Transmission
7/8 in. Rubber V Belt on adjustable pulley.
Standard Gear, 4 1/2 to 1, adjustable to as low as 6 2/3 to 1.
Rear chain protected by ample guard.
Frame
Wheelbase of 56 in.
A very low saddle position, while retaining a handsome diamond shape, and is made exceptionally strong.
Fitted with a special bracket for lamp and generator, in such a position that they obain all the benefit of the spring fork.
Tyres and Wheels
26 in. x 2 1/4 in. Dunlop Tyres on extra strong rims are fitted as standard.
Brake Drum is separately built.
Petrol and Oil
1 1/2 gallons of petrol and 1 quart of lubricating oil can be carried.
Petrol sufficient for 150 miles, Oil for 200 miles.
The specially constructed tank is fitted with large fillers, petrol gauge, and inclined pump fitted with valve.
There is also a pipe fitted for injecting petrol into the cylinder.
Stands and Carrier
Stands are fitted to back and front wheels. Special spring clips are fitted to the stands.
Large and strong carrier over back wheel.
Saddle and Toolbag
Brooks' B104 saddle is fitted, and is only 32 in. from the ground.
A special Rover design Valise, with two spring locks, is fitted on the back of the stand.
Mudguards
Large mudguards are fitted, with special wide metal flap in front, a wide extension over the belt at the back, and a special guard over the free-wheel.
Spring Fork
The "Druid" spring fork is adopted as standard.
Finish
Best black enamel on conslettised frame.
Tank, aluminium, suitably picked out and lined.
Brakes
Specially strong and easily detachable rim brake on front wheel, operated by hand.
Left nearside pedal operates powerful rim brake.
Number Plates
Back and front number plates are supplied, of strong section, and firmly attached to the front guard extension and rear of carrier.
Free Engine Clutch
The well known Triumph Free Engine Clutch is fitted under license from the Triumph Company.
Three-Speed Gear

Silencer
Specially large and efficient silencer is fitted, an the cut-out is operated from the handle-bar.

Engine

Carburettor and Control
Brown and Barlow carburettor.
The throttle and extra Air are both controlled from handle-bar, and both work inwards to advance and outwards to retard, while the Magneto, also controlled from the handle-bar, works outward to advance.
Ignition
Bosch weather-proof Magneto; other as in 1911.
Transmission
Standard Gear, 4 1/2 to 1, adjustable to as low as 6 1/2 to 1. Other as in 1911.
Frame
Wheelbase of 52 1/2 in. Other as in 1911.
Tyres and Wheels
As in 1911.
Petrol and Oil
Petrol sufficient for 125 miles, Oil for 300 miles.
The specially constructed tank is fitted with large fillers, fitted with strainers, petrol gauge, and inclined pump fitted with valve of an improved pattern which cannot stick up.

Brooks' or Lycetts' saddle is fitted, and is only 32 in. from the ground.

Engine
Three ball bearings to crank shaft, the two on chain side specially large. Steel flywheels. Nickel steel valves, specially large and interchangeable.
4 1/2 in. ground-clearance.

Carburettor and Control
As in 1912.
Ignition
Weather-proof high tension magneto. Other as in 1911.
Transmission
Silent chain drive to clutch on gear box, thence by belt from large pulley to rear wheel. Standard gear, 4 7/8 to 1.
Frame
Gives long wheel base of 54 in., a very low saddle position, and is made exceptionally strong and suitable for side-car work.
Tyres and Wheels
650 x 65, Dunlop Voiturette three-ribbed tyres on extra strong rims.
Petrol and Oil
2 gallons of petrol and 3 pints of lubricating oil can be carried.
The specially constructed tank is fitted with large glass-top fillers, and supplied with strainers and special oil pump fitted with shut-off valve, which prevents any leakage to the engine.
A tap and pipe are fitted for injecting petrol into the cylinder.

Saddle and Toolbag

Mudguards
Large mudguards are fitted, with special wide metal flap in front, and a wide extension over the belt at the back.
The rear guard extends downwards to the front to prevent water dripping on the bottom part of the belt, thus preventing slip.
The rear guard and top of carrier swing up on removing two thumb screws, facilitating tyre repairs.
Spring Fork
The "Druid" type spring fork is fitted as standard, with the addition of spring links at top, which take up all end thrust.

Left (near-side) pedal operates very powerful brake on belt rim. Other as in 1911.

Three-Speed Gear
The countershaft three-speed gear box gives ratios of 4 7/8 to 1, 8 1/3 to 1, and 15 to 1, with direct drive on top.
For solo work a larger sprocket may be fitted to special order, making top gear 4 3/8 to 1, and others in proportion.
