Pump is located at bottom of sump, and draws oil through a large filter, delivering it under pressure through regulator and tell-tale to big-end bearing and cylinder. Surplus returns to sump.
Much of the efficiency of the engine is due to this continual circulation of cool oil through engine.
The entire supply - one quart - sufficient for 1,000 miles running, is carried in the sump.
