The 'Meteor' series offers everything ROVER has to offer. - The picture shows the ROVER 'Meteor' as a four door Weymann saloon. The picture is taken from the test of the magazine 'The Motor' from April 14, 1931.
At the beginning of 1930 ROVER introduces its new top model "Meteor". The car, named after the Rover factory Meteor Works, West Orchard, Coventry, is based on a chassis with a wheelbase of 118 Inch with a 6-cylinder 2-litre engine, which came to 2565 cm³ with a new cylinder head (the Meteor Owners Handbook calls 2580 cm³ - probably a calculation error). With valves on top it was rated 19.3 hp by the RAC, ROVER advertised it as 20 hp. The actual line was probably 65 bhp.
As bodies there were available besides the Coachbuilt "Saloon" a "Saloon" and a "Sportsman's Saloon" with Weymann bodies. On an extended chassis with a wheelbase of 132 Inch a seven-seater chauffeur-driven limousine was offered. The cars were available in a "standard" and a "shelf" version - the latter justified its higher price with additional equipment like servo brakes and direction indicators.both versions could be further upgraded from an accessory list.
The four-speed gearbox and the low final drive ratio allowed good acceleration values, but limited the final speed to a maximum of 115 km/h.
From 1931 the chassis was lowered by 5 cm. The experiences with the "Speed" model probably played a role here.
The early models could be recognized by the idiosyncratic V-shaped headlights, which were only available on the "Meteor".
In 1933 ROVER completed the range with the 16hp model, Sportman's Saloon and Limousine were dropped. In 1934 only the 16hp - model was still available - it was probably traded on vehicles from the stockpile.
Also in 1933, some special bodies for both the 20hp and 16hp versions were available by famous coachbuilders. The are no specifications or figures available about the cars.
Exact production figures are not known; altogether one assumes 1150 20hp cars and 100 16hp cars. Unfortunately only a few survived.
